Don Berkman honored with award
Don Berkman, MCPF, long-time owner of Framemakers in Austin, Texas, was awarded the first “Berkman Award” on January 17 to recognize his many contributions as founding member of the PPFA Central Texas Chapter and to the profession of picture framing.
“It's the intention of this award to be given out periodically to other members who exhibit the same traits and qualities Don embodies but it will be known always as ‘The Berkman Award,’" says Ursula Overdiek, CPF, president of the Central Texas chapter
A large group gathered at Framemakers, including Don's wife Josephine, friends and Chapter members. Ursula had only told him, that the board needed his shop for a meeting. That this "meeting" was about him came as a total surpise.
After the award presentation, Dan Merrell, owner of Merrell’s House of Art, Austin, Texas, gave an overview of the beginning of the chapter and Don’s accomplishments since then.
“Don’s influence upon framers goes beyond the Austin city limits and well beyond the borders of Texas, he has friends and fans from across the country,” Merrell says.
Several letters of congratulations were presented and attendees reminisced about times past.
Don is not only a Master Certified Picture Framer but also an accomplished artist and photographer. A Houston native, where he did framing in the mid ’70s, he moved to Austin and when he discovered that no PPFA chapter existed there, gathered area framers and started one. The group has grown into one of the most successful PPFA chapters in the country.
Don began his framing career in Houston where he was originally a member of the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter. In 1977, he attended one of the first PPFA shows, held in New Orleans. He moved on to Austin, there was no chapter there and it was then that Don decided to gather framers together and start one! They became the Central Texas Chapter.
An educational conference in San Antonio in the mid ’80s brought the two chapters together; and since then, they have teamed on many joint projects such as gilding workshops that brought national gilders to the area, and combined CPF and Recertification programs.
“The relationships Don forges have benefited both chapters in sharing judging opportunities that help to keep the competitions lively,” Linda Wassell,MCPF,Fine Art Services, Spring, Texas.
Don has been a teacher and mentor to framers interested in preservation and traditional water gilding. He has taught at many local shows and national conferences, Décor shows and chapter meetings around the country.
Don was a member of the Competition Board for five years, retiring from that position last February.
“He, Chris Paschke and Brian Wolf made tremendous changes and brought the PPFA competitions to the most comprehensive and prestigious events in our industry,” Wassell says.
Don was among the first framers to earn the CPF designation and the first to become an MCPF. He is an examiner for the MCPF exam and brought the exam to be offered at the local level. He currently is a member of the Certification Board and is working to revise guidelines and maintain the quality of the program. Several years ago he was a contributor to the Art & Picture Framing Glossary of Standard Terms.
“Don is well respected in the framing community and is often called upon for advice,” Wassell says.
In 2008, Don received the PPFA Service Award, for his special contributions to the local chapter; his impact on the industry and his innovations in promoting art and framing.

Words about Don
From Dan Merrill

Don Berkman is the George Washington of the Central Texas PPFA chapter. He is the father of our chapter. Without him, we might never have existed.
In the 70’s he began framing in Houston. He became friends with the legendary Pat and Bill Bradley. In 1977 he attended one of the first PPFA shows in New Orleans.
When Don moved to Austin, he wanted to have a chapter here like they had in Houston. But there wasn’t one. I probably would have said “Gosh, that’s too bad, I really wish they had a chapter here.” Not Don. He went to work and I guess got a list of PPFA members and called us all together to have a chapter forming meeting in his shop on Hancock. This was sometime around 1990. I remember some of the attendants were Jean Garlick, Judy Johns. Don told us of the things that were possible if we would form a chapter. He actually found out what was needed for us do this. Of course, he was our first president. He led us fearlessly. Jean kept the minutes in such a fun way- always with humor but keeping track of what was going on.. (I remember her coming to a meeting several years later dressed in her pajamas and robe because we were meeting so early.) Judy was the treasurer (big whoop-we had no money). I was vice-president in charge of meetings-which included what the meeting was to be about and who would teach. Don taught a couple of classes, as did I but one of the more memorable meetings that was having Cheryl Carabba come and visit with us about paper conservation. Honestly, my job was easy because all the other members had great ideas for programs. For one program, we had every member bring one or two hints that might be helpful to the other members.
While all this was going on, Don was working with the folks in Richmond to get us recognized formally as a PPFA chapter.
Sometime during these years, we had a meeting in San Antonio to try to get the framers there interested in joining our chapter. They were very underwhelmed. We had a terrible time getting any interest from them and only a couple of them showed up. I believe though that this is the time that the Houston people came and we got to know many of them including Linda Wassell.
Don was a big believer in the framing competitions. He got that started not long after we started meeting. He was an entrant (who often won) and also a judge- not at the same time, of course. Don was great at twisting the arms of suppliers to get prize money for these competitions. I believe that at least one year, we had a larger amount than national. He has carried this passion forward to being a member of the first Framing Competition Board along with Chris Paschke and Brian Wolf. This past February he completed his 5 year tour of duty. The competitions have just gotten better because of his leadership. D
Don has been a teacher and mentor to many of us in Austin, Houston, and the nation. If you need to know something about framing, ask Don. He is a great resource for information. And he is glad to share with anyone interested in improving his framing skills. He has taught at many of our local chapter meetings as well as many chapter shows, national conferences and Décor shows and many chapter meetings across the country. Don is well respected and is often called upon for advice. Several years ago, he was one of the contributors to the Glossary of Framing Terminology.
He was among the first to become a CPF and in the first group to become a MCPF. He has been an examiner for the MCPF exam and has brought the exam to some local chapters. At this time Don is on the Certification Board and is working to revise guidelines and maintain the quality of the program.
In 2008 Don received the PPFA Service Award. This a
